I have been Interviewed!

Suzie over at Suzie Button Creations has interviewed me recently. Suzie is a Broadcast Captioner for television. It is because of that piece of information that her blog caught my eye. I am a user of captioned television due to my hearing loss which I have had since birth.
Suzie started this Weekly Side Dish to share some of the interesting things she learns while she is doing her captioning job. One of those posts was about Plarn which I talk about on my craft blog. Anyway, Suzie decided to interview me about my experiences as a hearing impaired person trying to function in a hearing world. Suzie did a good job putting together this post. I would be honored if you would go on over there to read it. I felt honored to be interviewed in the first place.
Thank you Suzie for choosing to interview me on a topic that many people still do not understand. Hope you all learn something new!
~Linnea~

That was a nice interview! I teach my kindergarteners how to sign our patriotic songs. I learned to sign the alphabet a long time ago. A couple of summers ago I met an online friend (who is deaf) in person and when she was having trouble reading my lips I was able to spell the word out for her.

Thanks for sharing your story.

take care,
Dawn

Great interview, Linnea! My father had a hearig disability in one ear, and I know how important it is to speak face to face. One of my best friend's brothers was completely deaf, and I tried to teach myself sign so I could communicate with him. Fortunately his lip reading was far better than my signing. :-)

Enjoyed your interview...

XO,

Sheila :-)

Linnea, It is an honor for you to be interviewed. I'm sure that you have a wealth of knowledge that will educate people. I worked in education and one area of services that is provided is interpreters to work with hearing impaired students. The interpreters are very skilled and there is a high demand for their services.

What a wonderful interview.
Our youngest has a fluctuating conductive hearing loss. He refuses to wear his hearing aides. He is missing out on so much, but still, those hearing aides sit in their box. Can't force him to wear them, but I keep on encourgaing him to do so.

Hi Linnea...I went and read the wonderful interview. Very informative...as I told Suzie, my mother was very hard of hearing, she wore two very poor quality hearing aids all her life...It even affected me, I was always getting into trouble in school and getting yelled at for talking too loud...That was all I knew. I couldn't control the volumne in school after talking loud at home...she never had t.v. with captions so she really must have missed out on alot...something I never thought about....

Linnea, It was nice to read a little more about you. I have the exact opposite problem. I am blind in one eye and my hearing has over compensated. I hear everything. The slightest sounds sometimes irritate me. My children have learned that mom "can hear everything"!

I've been busy, and just finally found time to read your interview. Very interesting. Thank you for sharing your story.

I was frustrated recently when watching captioning. I had muted the TV for my boyfriend and I was reading the captioning, as I will sometimes do. I have often been amazed at how poor the captioning is much of the time. The person doing it appears to be a bad speller, poor typist, or both. The other day was especially bad, and I was very frustrated trying to interpret the typos and figure out what was actually trying to be said. I can't imagine how frustrating and/or exhausting it would be if I had to invest so much energy in just trying to figure out what is being said all of the time.
