Outdoor Wednesday-A Sunflower Question

Welcome to Outdoor Wednesday!
I have not posted an Outdoor Wednesday post
in a long time now.
Well, a few weeks anyway.
Thank you to Susan at A Southern Daydreamer for hosting!
~~~~~~~
I have a question about sunflowers.
This is my first time ever to grow sunflowers.
Here is my first sunflower in bloom!
It is not one of those big ones.
I did not know it was going to be a smaller one.
~~~~~~~
Before I go on.....
here are a few scenery pictures.
The fog rolling in from the Pacific Ocean.
We live about an hour away from the ocean.
But we still get the fog coming over those hills to the west.
I captured this scene from behind our house.
This is a different day.
We were on the way home from Joann's Fabrics.
B-Daddy slowed down so I could get this shot.
We are looking west were and the fog is coming over the hills
in the distance.
This is the road we were on.
An area of expensive homes.
I love driving on this road.
Great views.
Don't mind the dirty windshield!
Now we are back on the road I usually drive on
to and from work.
This tree lined section is really neat.
Sorry about the spots on the windshield.
This is what we see after we come out from the
tree tunnel.
Boy, I really need to clean my windshield!
~~~~~~~
After that interlude,
back to the sunflower.
Once it appeared the sunflower was done,
I decided to clip it and explore my
first sunflower.
Here is it after I cleaned away some of the fuzz
and surrounding green cover.
I realized those are seeds there!
Well, I kinda knew there should be seeds there.
But being my first sunflower........
you know......
I wasn't sorta kinda sure.
You know what I mean?
I took some of the seeds out.
I always thought the seeds were darker with shells.
But I guess those are from the really
BIG
Sunflowers.
So I guess my question is:
Are these seeds edible?
Should I do something with them first?
Did I take them out of the sunflower too soon?
I am out of the loop when it comes to sunflowers.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Pretty please??
Here is another close up of the seeds.
I have three more blooms out in the yard.
I want to know more of what to do
before I pick those.
Thanks!!
And now have a
Happy Outdoor Wednesday!
~Linnea~
Hi Linnea, I found a website that has the answers to your question about the sunflower...
Lovely photos of your drive. Are you in Northern or Southern CA? I'm in Merced. I wish I were closer to the coast!
Can't help with the seed question but we planted the giant ones a few times. I think the packages will say giant or jumbo or something like that.
I did a Wordless Wedndsday post with close ups of the flower heads after we harvested them. You can find it in my archive, or lables in the left column of my blog
I would think you could eat those, but don't quote me on that! I'm sure the birds would love them.
Wow, your 1st sunflowers!! I know you can plant the seeds next year but don't know what they are suppose to look like or when to do your thing to them. I also know the birds eat those things like crazy in my MILs garden. Good luck finding more info and you are probably right about my flower shot because this clump looked like it could have been too big too. Blessings!
Lovely sunflower -- I love the smaller ones. We used to have sunflower growing contests in our family -- my Dad usually won for largest sunflower. I don't remember much about eating the seeds --I think you just toast them and then salt them. OR you save them and plant them next year!
I have no clue but you could Google it?? I pretty much find an answer to just about anything on Google. Good luck!
So thrilled with our fog...keeps things cool when it arrives! Have a good one!
On the sunflower seeds...it looks like from what I can tell you may have taken them too soon. They look more like regular sunflower seeds when the flower has dried up and "gone to seed". As far as I know you can eat them. The birds usually eat mine.
Hey Linnea,
Thanks for popping in for a visit...I always laugh and say, "all the planets need to line up so I can get something done!" LOL Boy, do they ever this week...it's been awful.
I love the sunflower..such an awesome creation..God really has those details down pat, doesn't he? :0)
Have a restful evening,
Hi Linnea, congratulations on your first sunflower!
I love to grow sunflowers too. I like to let them dry out in the bud till the seed falls out. I usually replant them the following year or make bird seed from them.
You are hooked my friend!
Hi Linnea
Wow your sunflower looks so pretty. Aren't they really nice happy flowers... good for you. I hope to plant some next summer.
I don't know about when you should be picking them. The one thing is you don't have that "skin" on them so I wonder whether they should have been on more. Maybe google and see what you can find out.
I hope you've had a great long weekend.
