Pink Saturday #4

The Linnea Flower also known as the Twinflower

Pictured are some things I have with the Linnea flower on them. On the upper left is some stationery that has my name on it. The letter paper and envelopes inside also show images of the flowers. I have used a few sheets from the package, but I can't bring myself to use anymore. I want to hang on to them. Next is a napkin that I found recently at a Scandavian shop in our town. There is also a tablecloth, but it was kind of pricey. Maybe eventually I will get it. But the napkin here is eventually going to my granddaughter who has Linnea for a middle name. My daughter who also has Linnea for a middle name already has one of these napkins. The name Linnea has come down several generations now, but on the Finnish side of the family rather than the Swedish side. Linnea is a Swedish name. When I introduce myself to new patients, many think it is a Hawiian name. I am always correcting people on that. :-)

The bowl was made in Sweden with the Linnea flower painted around it on the outside. I use it for a candy dish somtimes for gatherings. My mother bought it for me one year. My mother also has the name Linnea for a middle name. I am the only one living in the family who has it for a first name. My grandfather's sister was Linnea, but she died in the flu epidemic in 1919-1920.

The cloth in front is a small table runner or dresser scarf with the Linnea flower printed around the edge. I use it on my piano and the piano lamp sits on it. The jewelry items are not pink, but pewter. However, they are both made in Sweden and have Linnea flowers on them. I wear the necklace frequently. I have had both for many years already. I think my mother bought both of them for me. My dad is from Lindsborg, Kansas and when my family visits relatives there, they often came home with more Swedish things from the shops there.

Here is a close up of what is inside the stationery folder. You can barely see the lines on the paper. And the envelope has a blocked off place for putting the address. I guess if I knew I could get more, then I would probably use this more often. But right now I am not sure I can get more. Until then I am not using any more sheets.

This picture is a closeup of the two jewelry pieces so you can see the detail on them. The Linnea flower grows in the northern latitudes in wooded areas. They grow along the ground with two flowers on each stem that grows upward, hence the alternate name "twinflower".

I so enjoyed your post about the linnea flower! Is it a flower common only to certain parts of the country/world? I LOVE its tiny blooms. It is so great to learn about it today--and how special it is to your family as a familyname. If you ever make it to Independence, MO, we have a terrific little shop called The Scandanavian Shop you mind like to visit. I'll have to see what they have in the way of linnea flowers! How neat.
Happy PSat. Dana

In response to The Stone Rabbit, yes it only grows in the northern latitudes so it is not likely to be found here in the US. Maybe in Canada. But it definitely grows in Sweden.

I think it is wonderful to have so many nice things with "your" flower on them. Thank you for sharing the story of your name. My daughter gave my grand-daughter my name, Faith, for her middle name, Macie Faith. Maybe it will start a tradition in our family.

What pretty things! And so interesting to hear some of the history of the name. I love anything Swedish as I have an online Swedish friend. I also love Larssen paintings from Sweden. Hope I spelled the name right.
